With the choice overload of nutritional supplements, it is difficult to know which collagen is the best choice for us. On the shelves we can find beef, fish and even a vegetable collagen substitute, which is made from protein plant peptides. Why hydrolysed fish collagen?
Dietary supplements are food supplements in the form of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, fibres or plant extracts. They help us regulate an insufficiently balanced diet. They provide us with enough substances that our body needs to function, or they help to reduce the risk of diseases and restore our physical balance.
After the age of 20, the body’s ability to produce collagen gradually decreases. After the age of 25, however, it declines by about 1% each year. At the age of 40, the body’s ability to produce collagen decreases by 25% and by the age of 60 it decreases by more than 50%.
If we want to provide the body with enough collagen to function optimally and keep the skin firm, we simply need to add it.
What exactly is collagen?
Collagen is the main structural protein in the extracellular matrix of the various connective tissues of the body. As the main component of connective tissue, it is the most common protein in mammals, accounting for 25% to 35% of total body protein. Collagen is composed of amino acids linked in a triple helix of elongated fibres known as the collagen helix. It is mostly found in connective tissue such as cartilage, bones, tendons, ligaments and skin.
Collagen is divided into types:
- type I – the most common type of collagen, found in skin, bones, teeth, tendons, ligaments, blood vessel walls and organs,
- type II – mainly found in cartilage,
- type III – present in the skin, muscles and blood vessels.
Collagen therefore plays a key role in the structure of the skin. A large part of the connective tissue and the upper layers of the skin is formed by collagen, which tightens and smooths the skin and provides a youthful appearance. It forms, so to speak, a framework for the skin that allows the skin to store moisture, provides elasticity and generally supports the regeneration of skin cells. As this substance becomes increasingly unstable with age, the connective tissue becomes looser and the skin becomes noticeably more wrinkled.
What is hydrolysed collagen? What about marine collagen?
Hydrolysed collagen is prepared by a special enzymatic process that enables the acquisition of small molecules to be optimally absorbed and stimulate the synthesis of own collagen in tissues where it is lacking.
Marine collagen – marine or fish collagen – comes from wild-caught fish, where the collagen is extracted from their skin and scales through a process of hydrolysis – with the help of water, the collagen molecules are broken down into peptides.
It helps us naturally elevate collagen levels.
The marine collagen in our kefir was specially created for Krepko Dairy by the Slovenian company Medex.
It is hydrolysed fish collagen, a protein with a special amino acid composition and good bioavailability. It contains collagen molecules that are effectively absorbed into the skin and nourish it from the inside.
Studies on the effectiveness of hydrolysed collagen have shown that the particles of hydrolysed collagen are perfectly absorbed, pass partially undamaged through the intestinal wall, into the bloodstream and stimulate the synthesis of our own collagen.
It contains small collagen particles with a low molecular weight, which are perfectly absorbed into the body.
Therefore, using moisturising collagen creams and similar anti-wrinkle products is pointless, since collagen, precisely due of its structure and size, cannot penetrate through the top layer of the skin and reach the critical points where it could work effectively.
It only makes sense to use collagen »from the inside«!
What are the health benefits of drinking collagen? What do the current studies say on this topic?
- Wrinkle reduction:
Women who consumed collagen for 12 weeks had less deep visible wrinkles than a comparable group of women who did not consume collagen. - Skin elasticity:
After 8 weeks of collagen consumption, a group of women had improved skin moisture quality and youthfulness compared to a group that did not consume collagen. - Better nail growth:
It was also found that the group that took collagen supplements daily developed stronger and longer nails that were more resistant to damage. - Increasing the amount of other proteins that benefit the skin:
Collagen increases the amount of other skin-friendly proteins in the body. Collagen consumption is also associated with increased production of elastin (a protein that makes up the flexible fibres of connective tissue) and fibrillin (involved in the formation of elastic fibres, especially in the deposition of elastin). Elastin and fibrillin are essential for skin firmness and contribute to the youthful appearance of healthy skin.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important antioxidant role in humans and participates in many biological processes.
It also participates in the formation of collagen, which is necessary for the normal functioning of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth.
In addition to the antioxidant effect, the consumption of vitamin C also has an antiviral effect, as it improves resistance to infections. Vitamin C protects the immune system, reduces the severity of allergic reactions and helps prevent infections. Our kefir contains 80 mg of vitamin C, which covers the daily needs of an adult.
Vitamin C plays an important role in the production of collagen for optimal skin function.
Rose
A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant from the genus Rosa of the family Rosaceae, and its flower carries the same name. The flowers of this fragrant plant have been used in medicine and cosmetics in our surroundings since the Middle Ages. For the production of its essences – rose water, hydrosol and essential oil – three main groups of roses are used globally: damascus roses and white roses (grown in Bulgaria) and centenary roses (grown especially in France and North Africa).
- The rose is attributed with esoteric powers, especially associated with feminine primal energy.
- In the language of symbols, the rose represents love and beauty.
- According to an ancient tradition, the essential oil of the damascus rose brings a feeling of joy and happiness, it is even called »love potion«.
- In Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), rose flowers are used to relieve women’s problems related to menstrual cycles, headaches, calming, reducing inflammation and skin care.
- The cooling nature of petals is excellent for balancing the mind, heart and emotions.
- In aromatherapy, rose preparations are recommended to reduce stress, eliminate anxiety and release mental and physical tension.
