The legend of kefir

The legend of kefir is shrouded in mystery, as there is still no research into how the kefir grains were formed. The efforts of many scientists to artificially produce kefir grains with the same healing properties as natural kefir grains have been unsuccessful to date.

There is a legend among the people living in the Caucasus Mountains that the kefir grains were brought by the prophet Mohammed and are often referred to as the prophet’s grains. Mohamed is also supposed to have taught them how to make traditional kefir from kefir grains.

Caucasus – home of the kefir grain

The Caucasian peoples hid the prophet’s grains from others for more than 1,400 years, until word spread that they were drinking a kind of elixir of life in the Caucasus Mountains and that they were living for up to 150 years because of it. The medieval explorer Marco Polo mentions kefir in his travelogues. The first kefir grains were brought to Moscow in 1908, after which they slowly spread to Western countries.

Krepko Dairy’s kefir grains also come from the Caucasus Mountains.
